Who Needs a Cover Letter?
Cover letters come up in many places throughout your professional and academic careers. Job hunters will find that most of their prospective employers want to see a cover letter. Students will often be required to write cover letters to get into higher education programs, internships, or part-time work. They’re a crucial part of most of your job and school-based applications.
Generally, you’ll know if you’re required to produce a cover letter. A job posting will ask you to send a cover letter, or a school will specify that you should write out a cover letter to go with your application. However, it never hurts to write out a cover letter for any job you’re applying for; even if they weren’t expecting one, most employers will appreciate that you would go through the extra effort to set yourself apart for the position.
